Emma’s debt free story

There’s nothing more satisfying for us as a company than to help someone become debt free. The sense of freedom that comes along with beating your debt can be life changing. We spoke to one of our customers, Emma, about her experience getting debt free on a Debt Management Plan with Gregory Pennington. This is her story.

GP: So Emma, what led to you finding yourself in financial difficulty?

Emma: Between the years 2000 and 2004 I was working in a full-time job bringing regular money in, so things were pretty stable. I had a few credit commitments – laptop on finance, store-cards and loans, that kind of thing. But I was working so I could afford the repayments.

GP: What changed for you?

Emma: My circumstances changed quite dramatically when I lost my job. While I was looking for work, I fell behind with my repayments and I found it harder and harder to keep on top of them.

GP: Our customers often say that their debt problems started affecting other areas of their life as well. Would you say that’s true in your case?

Emma: Definitely. I actually started to feel like I was suffocating or drowning. I started avoiding phone calls and letters because I knew they were from my lenders. The worry started to affect normal things, like my sleep and appetite.

GP: How did you hear about us and did you find it difficult making that first phone call?

Emma: My brother put me in contact. I probably left it for a few months before I reached out for the help I needed. That first phone call was emotional! But you told me you could help and I felt better straight away.

GP: Tell us a little bit about your experience on the plan?

Emma: You were great to deal with, you called me back when I asked you to and you were really understanding whenever anything changed in my life, like when I lost my Grandad. You supported me every step of the way. I really felt like you were interested in what was going on for me – like I was a person not just a number. Your staff are brilliant – they really know their stuff!

GP: Congratulations on completing your Debt Management Plan! How do you feel knowing that you’ve completed it and you’re debt free?

Emma: I can’t believe I’ve completed it! It feels great not to have to make monthly payments anymore and to have that extra money in my pocket. I hope I never get into financial difficulties again but if I do, you’re the ones I would go back to!
