Billpayers warned to prepare for expensive winter bills
18 January 2011
Billpayers should make sure they are prepared for expensive bills following the coldest December on record, says price comparison website moneysupermarket.com.
With around 40% of annual energy consumption used during winter, customers who pay for their exact energy usage on a quarterly basis could face bills of around £437 next month - based on an average £1,093 annual bill.
Those bills could prove particularly difficult for those already struggling with their finances, or trying to repay existing debts.
An expert at debt management company Gregory Pennington said: "Many households will be faced with particularly expensive bills after the harsh winter. We`d advise them to make sure they are as well prepared as possible for a potential increase in their costs.
"This highlights the importance of careful planning when it comes to energy bills. For most people, the most manageable way to pay energy bills is to set up a fixed monthly Direct Debit arrangement, based on average monthly usage. This way, bills are much easier to budget for as they stay the same all year round.
"Anyone concerned about their ability to pay their bills should get in touch with an expert adviser to discuss their options."
