Scotland`s debt capital named

Research by market research firm CACI has revealed that Anderston - on the western fringes of Glasgow city centre - is Scotland`s `most debt-ridden community`, with almost one in five residents owing more than £15,000 in unsecured loans, The Times reports.

In Anderston, 19.2% of residents are carrying unsecured debts totalling more than £15,000. This is followed by 17.4% in the Calton area of Glasgow, and 16.5% for both Dunfermline South and Greater Pollok.

The statistics are much higher than they are in Orkney, Hawick and Hermitage, and Harris and South Lochs - where the percentage of residents with debts of over £15,000 is 7%, 7.1% and 7.3% respectively.

The figures, which are based on surveys completed by 16m people, show that almost 500,000 Scots are carrying unsecured debts amounting to more than half the average Scottish salary.

Anas Sarwar, Labour`s parliamentary candidate for the Glasgow Central constituency, said: "This is very concerning. We need to make sure we are supporting families and individuals who get themselves in difficulty with debt."
