Youngsters taught about debt
The programme, called Barclays Money Skills, was developed by West Yorkshire Trading Standards and Barclays. It is intended to teach over 9,000 16-25 year olds in the North of England about a range of financial subjects, such as budgeting, credit and debt.
West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service`s Chief Trading Standards Officer, Graham Hebblethwaite, said: "We all know that better budgeting can help people to avoid problem debt and shopping around for suitable financial products can help us make the most of our income."
He went on to say that the programme "not only helps young people develop that knowledge, but also builds confidence to take a greater responsibility for their financial affairs and to play a more active role in the financial services market."
A debt management specialist for Gregory Pennington said: "It is important that youngsters are encouraged to learn skills such as debt management and budgeting - as these skills may well save them from financial problems in the future."
