Energy billpayers could avoid debt by switching online

uSwitch.com has claimed that only a small proportion of energy customers are benefiting from the cheapest deals, which are usually only offered online.
The price comparison website said that only around 1.3 million households (5% of them) are on online energy plans and paying the cheapest prices on the market.
It added that online energy plans are up to £344 a year cheaper than suppliers` standard plans - yet 12.5 million households are still on these standard plans.
A spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington said: "At a time when many people are struggling with rising costs of living and debt repayments, it makes good sense to search around for the best energy deals, which could save money for a lot of people."
