Consider food costs `to avoid debt`
The study by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) claimed that people could save money by swapping fresh fruit and vegetables for tinned and frozen equivalents.
Just 80p per day could buy the five portions of fruit and vegetables recommended by nutritionists, according to the report - meaning shoppers could avoid debt and look after their health at the same time.
A spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington said: "It may seem like a small matter, but a lot of people have managed to improve their finances by considering what they are buying, and where they buy it.
"In previous years people may have felt comfortable enough to make purchases without fully considering the financial impact - which is how some people ended up in debt in the first place. Nowadays, people seem to be taking a lot more care, which can only be a good thing."
