Debt problems amongst middle class `have doubled`
Transact, which co-ordinates debt advice centres across the UK, said that the recession and rising unemployment have significantly affected many `white collar` workers, with some owing more than £100,000 in credit card and loan repayments.
A spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington said: "Debt problems are by no means exclusive to people on lower or average incomes. A large number of higher earners are also finding themselves in trouble.
"We are currently seeing a lot of people becoming unemployed, and people who could previously afford to make large purchases on credit may now find themselves with large debts that they cannot afford to repay.
"It`s very important that anyone having trouble with their debts seeks advice as soon as the problem starts. The sooner debt problems are addressed, the quicker they can be solved."
