Youngsters see debt as biggest fear
It seems that 48% of the 1,220 young people (aged 16-25) questioned see debt as one of their biggest future fears, while 40% are worried about unemployment, 38% are worried about violent crime, and 30% are `fearful for the challenge presented by global warming`.
The research was carried out for Community Service Volunteers (CSV), the charity founded in 1962 by Mora and Alec Dickson - the same people who founded Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO).
`The aim of our founders,` the CSV website states, `was to involve young people aged 16-35 in voluntary service in the UK, to enrich the lives of volunteers and those they help and to generate social change.`
"Young people have genuine fears for the future but they are not powerless to overcome them," said Sue Farrington from Agents4Change, a two-year campaign coordinated by CSV.
"They can help keep our streets safer by mentoring young people at risk of offending, give advice on managing debt by volunteering to teach budgeting and financial skills and help combat global warming by taking part in recycling or conservation projects."
