37% of landlords dealing with tenants in arrears

New figures from the National Landlords Association (NLA) have shown that over one in three landlords currently have tenants in arrears on their rent payments.

The NLA`s research showed that 37% of landlords currently have tenants who have fallen into debt on their payments, while 44% have experienced problems with rental arrears in the last six months.

David Salusbury, Chairman of the NLA, said that rent should be a priority for tenants, since even one month`s arrears could cause problems for landlords in the current climate.

A spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington said: "Rent, like a mortgage, is a particularly important cost, since it pays for the tenant`s home. Anyone who finds themselves struggling with their rent payments should seek debt advice as soon as possible so they can discuss the best way to solve the problem."
