Scottish Power to pay interest to customers in credit
From the beginning of June, the company will pay customers £1 for every £33 of credit on balances over £100, up to a maximum of £500. This will take place every 12 months when the customer`s direct debit payments are reassessed.
The move comes after industry regulator Ofgem said that it would `crack down on power companies that don`t deal fairly with their customers who pay by direct debit`, as The Guardian reports.
A spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington said: "Customers who have built up large credit balances will welcome this move from Scottish Power, but there is often no need to build these credit balances in the first place. Providing the customer takes frequent meter readings and contacts their supplier regularly, it`s possible to keep payments at a level that reflects their usage."
