Personal debt in Wales `rocketing`
Shelter Cymru says that its specialist advisers dealt with almost £8.5 million of personal debt between October and December 2008 – almost double the level of debt seen in April 2008.
"These are just the people we`re seeing," said Shelter Cymru`s National Operations Manager Janet Loudon. "There are likely to be many more vulnerable families and individuals in desperate financial circumstances who aren`t on our radar at all.
"The potential impacts of this kind of personal debt on families and communities are enormous – extreme poverty, long-term financial exclusion, physical and mental ill-health and homelessness."
According to newswales.co.uk, Shelter Cymru has the equivalent of four full-time staff providing specialist debt advice across Wales.
