UK energy bills rise four times faster than European average
Across Europe, the average increase was 3.8% (less than a quarter of the UK figure), with Danish consumers seeing a rise of just 1.3%. As The Telegraph reports, Australia and Turkey were the only developed nations to experience more rapid price rises – 20% and 28.7% respectively.
Today’s economic problems make high prices all the more difficult to cope with: “People today are struggling not just with record levels of personal debt, but also – in many cases – with lower incomes,” said a debt management expert for Gregory Pennington.
“2008’s price rises mean that energy bills are now taking an extra £30 or so out of the average British household’s monthly budget, compared with this time last year. It’s a significant extra burden which is making it harder for many households to manage their debts.”
