Council Tax arrears: a dangerous debt

In 2008, over a million people were summoned to court for failure to make their Council Tax payments in full, a political party has reported.

According to the Liberal Democrats, almost 600,000 people with Council Tax arrears were visited by bailiffs, and councils filed for bankruptcy against more than 1,700 people in order to collect Council Tax arrears.

“As a priority debt, Council Tax is a particularly important debt,” said a debt management expert for Gregory Pennington. “Non-payment can have severe consequences – as these figures demonstrate.

“In many cases, people miss Council Tax payments, mortgage payments, utility payments and other priority debts because payments to their non-priority debts (credit cards, overdrafts, unsecured loans, etc.) take up too much of their income.

“We would advise anyone in that situation to seek debt advice without delay. Depending on their circumstances, they may benefit from a debt solution – a debt management plan, for example, or a debt consolidation loan – which could reduce the amount of money they need to service their unsecured debts every month.”
