British gas offers 10% cheaper tariff

British Gas has offered a new tracker energy tariff which it promises will remain 10% cheaper than its standard tariff until March 2010.

The WebSaver 1 tariff could save customers hundreds of pounds a year if energy prices drop, according to The Guardian.

Energy providers have come under pressure to drop their energy prices as the costs of wholesale oil and gas have fallen. Increasing numbers of households have fallen into fuel poverty in the past year, with many being pushed towards debt.

A spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington said: “It’s good to see a firm commitment to saving customers money, and consumers will hope that other providers decide to follow suit.

“Of course, cuts in tariffs won’t necessarily be enough to help people who are already struggling with debt. We advise anyone in that situation to seek professional debt advice as soon as possible.”
