Phoning abroad to become cheaper

The cost of using mobile phones abroad may be set to come down next year, if the European Parliament approves proposals by EU Telecommunications Commissioner Viviane Reding.

At the moment, the BBC reports, the average text message costs 23 pence, but this would fall to 9 pence – and voice calls would fall from 36 pence per minute to 27.

“Talk isn’t always cheap,” said a spokesperson for debt management company Gregory Pennington, “so it’s good to see the EU taking an active interest in areas such as this.

“At a time of high inflation and economic turbulence, people are facing higher bills just about everywhere they turn. It may be the larger amounts, like mortgage payments and gas bills, which attract the most attention, but phone bills and other less significant charges can really add up, eating into people’s disposable incomes and making it particularly hard for borrowers to manage their debts.”
