UK national debt works out at £138,360 per household
8 April 2011
Britain`s national debt is equivalent to £138,360 for every household in the country, it has been revealed.
The Daily Mail reports that the national debt is `even larger than initially feared`, according to the Centre for Policy Studies (CPS).
Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) state that the total public sector debt is around £876bn - or £33,100 per household in the country. And if all the debt from the banks rescued by the State is taken into account, the figure rises to £2.3tn.
However, the CPS says that the `real figure` is £3.6tn - which is four times bigger than the `bank-free` total.
Conservative MP Brooks Newmark, co-author of the Centre for Policy Studies` report, The Hidden Debt Bombshell, said: "The size of the country`s debt is bad, but actually it is even worse than people think."
