Don`t be afraid to seek debt help

If you find yourself struggling with debt, it`s a good idea to get some professional debt help at the earliest possible opportunity. The sooner you act, the sooner you`ll be on your way to clearing your debts.

When should I get help with my debts?

In general, you should speak with an expert debt adviser at the first sign that you`re having trouble with your debts. If you`re having difficulty making one or more of your debt repayments - or even if it looks like you could struggle in a few months` time - you should seek debt advice as soon as you can.

Even if there aren`t any immediate signs that you`re in trouble, there could be signs of things to come. Take extra care if any of the following apply to you:

  • You regularly pay your bills late.
  • You are always in your overdraft at the end of each month.
  • You are regularly using credit for things you used to pay for with cash.

In short, if you think there is any risk that your debts could become a problem, you should discuss your situation with a debt adviser as soon as you can.

What help is available for my debts?

There is a great deal of help available for people in debt. Your debt adviser will recommend the best course of action for you, based on your circumstances.

Some people find that re-organising their finances is enough. For example, it`s always a good idea to create a budget (if you don`t already have one), which can help you to set aside the right amount for your essential costs and can help you find out how much money you can safely spend on other things. Similarly, your debt adviser might help you identify areas in which you can cut back and make more `room` for your debt repayments.

If your situation is more serious, though, your debt adviser might recommend a specific debt solution, such as a debt management plan or an IVA (Individual Voluntary Arrangement), to make your debt repayments manageable again.
